Abstract
Identification of Upwelling Areas Based on Indicators of Sea Surface Temperature and Chlorophyll-a in Sunda Strait Waters in 2010–2019
The Sunda Strait is a strait that connects the Java Sea with the Indian Ocean. The mixing of the two water masses in the Sunda Strait will affect seawater productivity. One phenomenon that is closely related to seawater productivity is upwelling. This study aims to determine areas indicated for upwelling in the Sunda Strait based on chlorophyll-a indicators and sea surface temperature (SST). The data used includes SST data from Aqua MODIS, chlorophyll-a data from OC-CCI, and wind speed data from ASCAT. Data processing with the composite method using the IDL programming language. The results showed that the peak of upwelling occurred in the southern part of the Sunda Strait with medium intensity during transitional season 2 with a chlorophyll-a value of 0.77 mg/m3 and an SST of 28.5º C due to currents moving westward to the Sunda Strait. driven by strong southeast monsoon winds. Whereas in the northern part of the Sunda Strait, which is directly adjacent to the Java Sea and surrounded by small islands, the concentration of chlorophyll-a tends to be constant, ranging from 0.3–0.5 mg/m3 with high SST values ranging from 29–30º C.
