Abstract
Pollen and spore fossils present in rocks can be used to reconstruct the paleoclimate when the rocks were deposited. Research on paleoclimate using pollen and spore fossils on Sumatra Island is still very rare. This study aims to reconstruct the paleoclimate in the Middle Miocene in Bengkulu using pollen and spore fossils from the Lemau Formation. Sampling used a purposive sampling method from measured stratigraphic cross-sections with a sample interval of 5-8 cm. Laboratory analysis used the hydrogen peroxide method and climate determination based on the presence of Arboreal Pollen, Non-Arboreal Pollen, Graminae, Montane Pollen and spore fossils. Of the 9 samples analyzed, it shows 4 change zones with a dominance of 3 zones in the form of a warm and humid climate and 1 zone with a warm and moderate humidity climate (Zone 3). In addition, based on the comparison of the presence of Arboreal Pollen and Non-Arboreal Pollen fossils, Zone 1 and Zone 3 show closed vegetation conditions and Zone 2 and Zone 4 show open vegetation conditions. The warm climate that occurred in the research area was the impact of the global events of the Middle Miocene Climate Optimum (MMCO) and Middle Miocene Climate Transition (MMCT).
