Abstract

Indonesia merupakan negara tropis dengan paparan sinar matahari yang tinggi. Salah satu faktor ekstrinsik yang dapat menyebabkan efek penuaan pada kulit adalah radiasi ultraviolet (UV) dari sinar matahari (photoaging). Paparan radiasi UV yang berlebih akan meningkatkan produksi Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) sehingga menyebabkan penurunan kemampuan sistem enzim antioksidan endogen dan memungkinkan dibutuhkannya faktor perlindungan dari luar untuk mencegah photoaging. Artikel bertujuan untuk membahas pengaruh suplementasi Astaxanthin (AST) dalam melawan photoaging. AST merupakan pigmen kemerahan yang terdapat pada hewan laut dengan aktivitas antioksidan yang tinggi melalui mekanisme radical scavenging. Suplementasi AST dapat digunakan untuk mencegah photoaging karena kemampuannya dalam menekan produksi ROS, mencegah penipisan lapisan kolagen, mencegah perubahan morfologi kulit dan pembentukan kerutan pada kulit.
