Review of Ship Sanitation Systems to Support Public Health and Maritime: A Case Study of Passenger Ferries in Semarang

Abstract

We evaluated the sustainability and feasibility of sanitation systems on passenger ferries operating in Semarang. Sanitation plays a vital role in maintaining public health, ensuring passenger safety, and supporting sustainable maritime transportation. This study employed a descriptive approach, relying on field observations and a literature review to assess sanitation conditions based on applicable health regulations and maritime standards. Evaluation focused on the availability of clean water, sanitation facilities, waste management systems, and the presence of disease vectors such as rodents. The results indicate that existing sanitation systems do not fully meet sustainability and health standards, particularly regarding waste management practices and vector control. It highlights the need to improve sanitation management through better maintenance practices, the application of appropriate waste treatment technologies, and increased awareness among ship crews. Findings contribute to bridging knowledge, technology, and society in achieving sustainable development, particularly in improving public health and resilience within maritime communities.
