Focus and Scope

Aims

The primary goal of the Journal of Sustainability Perspectives is to advance interdisciplinary understanding of sustainability through integrative inquiry shaped by the diversity of scientific, cultural, ethical, and practice-based perspectives. More specifically, the journal aims to promote research that supports sustainable development while recognizing the importance of operating within environmental limits and ensuring long-term societal continuity. We encourage contributions that provide analytical depth and constructive pathways for addressing contemporary sustainability challenges.

Scope

We publish original research articles, reviews, perspectives, and best-practice reports across the following areas:

• Environmental sustainability and planetary limits: climate action, biodiversity conservation, environmental governance, pollution mitigation, ecosystem restoration, and studies addressing ecological thresholds and boundary conditions.
• Sustainable technologies and materials: renewable energy systems, green and circular materials, waste-to-resource innovations, decarbonization strategies, and low-impact production systems.
• Socio-economic and cultural dimensions: community resilience, social equity, sustainable livelihoods, cultural sustainability, and inclusive development under environmental constraints.
• Governance, policy, and institutional arrangements: sustainability policy analysis, multi-level governance, regulatory frameworks, sustainability reporting, and institutional innovation.
• Integrated and cross-cutting approaches: systems thinking, transdisciplinary research, local and indigenous knowledge, sustainability transitions, and methodologies that align development with ecological and societal boundaries.

The journal does not consider submissions that:

• Lack a clear relevance to sustainability or sustainable development.
• Address purely technical, biological, chemical, or engineering topics without a sustainability context.
• Present descriptive case studies without analysis, methodological rigor, or conceptual contribution.
• Focus on business, economics, or social sciences without sustainability implications.
• Contain speculative claims, unverified methods, or promotional content.
• Fall within medical or clinical research not linked to environmental or sustainability issues.

Peer Review Process / Policy

All articles submitted to Journal of Sustainability Perspective should follow the scope of Journal and journal author guidelines. The submitted articles were single-blind reviewed by the expert scientific reviewers. The reviewers will give specific comments on the manuscript contents. The decision of manuscript acceptance is based on the consideration from Reviewers comments. The Editors will make the final decision on manuscript acceptance based on the comments of the reviewers.

Articles submitted to Journal of Sustainability Perspective should be free form Plagiarism or Autoplagiarsm and declared in a Letter signed by all Authors or representatives (Primary Author). The similarity of the articles is checked by a Turnitin plagiarism detection software.  

Open Access Policy

All articles published by the Journal of Sustainability Perspectives are done so with immediate open access and in accordance with the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) license. Published authors retain the copyright on their articles, without restrictions.

Archiving

This journal utilizes the LOCKSS system to create a distributed archiving system among participating libraries and permits those libraries to create permanent archives of the journal for purposes of preservation and restoration. More...

Publication Ethics

The Journal of Sustainability Perspectives is a peer-reviewed international journal. This statement clarifies the ethical behaviour of all parties involved in the act of publishing an article in this journal, including the author, the chief editor, the Editorial Board, the peer-reviewer­­­­­----- and the publisher (Diponegoro University). This statement is based on COPE’s Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors.

Ethical Guideline for Journal Publication

The publication of an article in the Journal of Sustainability Perspectives is an essential building block in the development of a coherent and respected network of knowledge. It is a direct reflection of the quality of the work of the authors and the institutions that support them. Peer-reviewed articles support and embody the scientific method. It is therefore important to agree upon standards of expected ethical behaviour for all parties involved in the act of publishing: the author, the journal editor, the peer reviewer, the publisher and the society.  

The Langkah Berkelanjutan Indonesia as publisher of the Journal of Sustainability Perspectives takes its duties of guardianship over all stages of publishing extremely seriously, and we recognize our ethical and other responsibilities. We are committed to ensuring that advertising, reprint or other commercial revenue has no impact or influence on editorial decisions. In addition, the Langkah Berkelanjutan Indonesia and Editorial Board will assist in communications with other journals and/or publishers where this is useful and necessary.

Publication decisions

The editor of the Journal of Sustainability Perspectives is responsible for deciding which of the articles submitted to the journal should be published. The validation of the work in question and its importance to researchers and readers must always drive such decisions. The editors may be guided by the policies of the journal's editorial board and constrained by such legal requirements as shall then be in force regarding libel, copyright infringement and plagiarism. The editors may confer with other editors or reviewers in making this decision.

Fair play

An editor at any time evaluates manuscripts for their intellectual content without regard to race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, citizenship, or political philosophy of the authors.

Confidentiality

The editor and any editorial staff must not disclose any information about a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, potential reviewers, other editorial advisers, and the publisher, as appropriate.

Disclosure and conflicts of interest

Unpublished materials disclosed in a submitted manuscript must not be used in an editor's own research without the express written consent of the author.

Duties of Reviewers

Contribution to Editorial Decisions 

Peer review assists the editor in making editorial decisions and through the editorial communications with the author may also assist the author in improving the paper.

Promptness 

Any selected referee who feels unqualified to review the research reported in a manuscript or knows that its prompt review will be impossible should notify the editor and excuse himself from the review process.

Confidentiality 

Any manuscripts received for review must be treated as confidential documents. They must not be shown to or discussed with others except as authorized by the editor.

Standards of Objectivity 

Reviews should be conducted objectively. Personal criticism of the author is inappropriate. Referees should express their views clearly with supporting arguments.

Acknowledgement of Sources 

Reviewers should identify relevant published work that has not been cited by the authors. Any statement that observation, derivation, or argument had been previously reported should be accompanied by the relevant citation. A reviewer should also call to the editor's attention any substantial similarity or overlap between the manuscript under consideration and any other published paper of which they have personal knowledge.

Disclosure and Conflict of Interest 

Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and not used for personal advantage. Reviewers should not consider manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or connections with any of the authors, companies, or institutions connected to the papers.

Duties of Authors

Reporting standards 

Authors of reports of original research should present an accurate account of the work performed as well as an objective discussion of its significance. Underlying data should be represented accurately in the paper. A paper should contain sufficient detail and references to permit others to replicate the work. Fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements constitute unethical behaviour and are unacceptable.

Data Access and Retention 

Authors are asked to provide the raw data in connection with a paper for editorial review. The author should also prepare to provide public access to such data (consistent with the ALPSP-STM Statement on Data and Databases), if practicable, and should in any event be prepared to retain such data for a reasonable time after publication.

Originality and Plagiarism 

The authors should ensure that they have written entirely original works, and if the authors have used the work and/or words of others that this has been appropriately cited or quoted.

Multiple, Redundant or Concurrent Publication 

An author should not, in general, publish manuscripts describing essentially the same research in more than one journal or primary publication. Submitting the same manuscript to more than one journal concurrently constitutes unethical publishing behaviour and is unacceptable.

Acknowledgement of Sources 

Proper acknowledgement of the work of others must always be given. Authors should cite publications that have been influential in determining the nature of the reported work.

Authorship of the Paper 

Authorship should be limited to those who have made a significant contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the reported study. All those who have made significant contributions should be listed as co-authors. Where there are others who have participated in certain substantive aspects of the research project, they should be acknowledged or listed as contributors. The corresponding author should ensure that all appropriate co-authors and no inappropriate co-authors are included on the paper and that all co-authors have seen and approved the final version of the paper and have agreed to its submission for publication.

Hazards and Human or Animal Subjects 

If the work involves chemicals, procedures or equipment that have any unusual hazards inherent in their use, the author must clearly identify these in the manuscript.

Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest 

All authors should disclose in their manuscript any financial or other substantive conflicts of interest that might be construed to influence the results or interpretation of their manuscript. All sources of financial support for the project should be disclosed.

Fundamental errors in published works 

When an author discovers a significant error or inaccuracy in his/her own published work, it is the author’s obligation to promptly notify the journal editor or publisher and cooperate with the editor to retract or correct the paper.

CrossMark Applying on JSP

Crossmark

Applying the CrossMark icon is a commitment by the Journal of Sustainability Perspectives to maintain the content published and alert readers to changes if and when they occur.

What is Crossmark?

CrossMark, a multi-publisher initiative from CrossRef, provides a standard way for readers to locate the authoritative version of a document. The Journal of Sustainability Perspectives recognizes the importance of the integrity and completeness of the scholarly record to researchers and librarians and attaches the highest importance to maintaining trust in the authority of its electronic archive. Clicking on the CrossMark icon will inform the reader of the current status of a document and may also provide additional publication record information about the document.

Article Processing Charge

The Journal of Sustainability Perspectives levies an Article Processing Charge (APC) of USD 50 (fifty US dollars) or IDR 800,000 (eight hundred thousand Indonesian rupiah) upon article acceptance. This fee enables the continued maintenance of the journal, including the release of articles under an open access license, DOI resgistration, and the production of full-text PDF articles.

Members of the Editorial Board are exempt, and reviewers receive a discount (although please note that being a reviewer or on the Board does not guarantee publication). Exemptions are also made for authors who are unable to pay the APC—we do not want these charges to hamper meaningful work. In such a case, please contact the Editorial Office after the invoice is sent, explaining your reasons for being unable to pay and a full or partial waiver will be considered. Payments should be made after an invoice is issued, via crediat card, or bank transfer (details will be provided alongside the invoice). Once the payment is received, the Editorial Office will issue a receipt. Please note thet articles will not be published untik the APC is paid.

Plagiarism Check

All articles submitted to the Journal of Sustainability Perspectives are passed through Turnitin. This software checks content agains a database of existing academic works, generating a similarity report and highlighting the percentage of overlap between the uploaded article and previously published material. This report is then scruntinized by the journal for suspected plagiarism, in accordance with our editorial policies. We use our discretion in determining the acceptable level of similarity, acknowledging that a certain level is unavoidable (e.g., in methods), and if the article is within such margins, it will be forwarded for further processing.

Understanding plagiarism

Ideally, all academic works are completed after a thorough review—of the integrity of the sience therein, and the previously published literature upon which it builds. And because all works build on those that came before them, it can be difficult to draw tyhe boundary between legitimate representation and plagiarism. Nevertheless, there are some ways we can understand this boundary:

• When someone claims anothre's words, findings, or ideas as their own, or reuses them without proper acknowledgement.
• Text recycling (i.e., self-plagiarism), where someone reuses the content of their own previous publication, without citing or acknowledging this reuse, leading readers to believe it is new.
• Improper paraphrasing: copying complete paragraphs and only modifying a few words without changing the structure or substance of the originial sentences.
• Copying text verbatin without putting quotation marks to indicate it's someone else's words, or otherwise failing to cite the original source.

As you can see, even when we properly cite a work, reusing the original text does not mean it isn't plagiarisme. Even unintentional plagiarism is still plagiarisme. Similarly, quoting large parts of someone else's work without making any original contribution (e.g., analyzing or contextualizing it) can suggest a lack of substance in a manuscript, in addition to the author using someone else's work to prop up their own.

On the other hand, some technical terms or turns of phrase have become so common that using them is unaviodable. We may find higher similarity in some parts of a manuscript than others, such as the methods, where similar techniques are being used or standard procedurs followed. Here, it is imperative that we don't judge a submission based on the similarity score alone, and as previously stated, the Journal of Sustainability Perspectives uses its disrection when determining acceptable similarity. We accept that there is always bound to be an overlap, but in cases where plagiarism is particularly egregious, the journal will reject the manuscript immediately. In the same vein, if we find that we mistakenly published a plagiarized article, ot will be retracted immediately (following careful investigation of the oncident), with a retraction notice given to indicate why the article has been removed. Authors will similarly be prevented from submitting again, at the journal's disrection.
