Abstract

Rice farming has been affected by climate change phenomena such as high rainfall and long dry seasons which have caused plant and crop failure. To minimize the impact of climate change on their farming, rice farmers undertake various strategies for dynamically adapting to climate change. This study aims to analyze and assess the dynamics of the mitigation response by rice farmers in West Java to minimize the impact of climate change. The object of research is rice farmers in West Java. The research sample was selected using a multi-stage cluster random sampling technique in such a way that respondents were selected as many as 300 rice farmers. Data analysis methods used are descriptive statistics and multivariate analysis of variance (manova). The results showed that rice farmers in West Java had dynamically mitigated climate change along with climate change that occurred from time to time. Types of climate change mitigation response that have been carried out by the majority of rice farmers in West Java include planting shade trees, using energy saving technologies, cultivating organic agriculture, planting crops other than rice, changing farming to farming, migrating, looking for income other than farming and renting / selling their land. . While the climate change mitigation response that still rarely carried out, but the dynamics are interesting to explore including shifting the planting and harvesting period, the selection of planted varieties, adaptation of cropping patterns and adaptation of irrigation techniques. Meanwhile, farmers in Subang district who implement at most 4 types of climate change mitigation responses have significantly higher farm income than farmers in Indramayu and Karawang.
