First, PM2.5, PM10, NO2, O3, SO2, black carbon, wildfire smoke, extreme heat, and heavy metals are most commonly associated with adverse externalities. Second, the preconception period, the first trimester, and the beginning of the second trimester are often sensitive exposure windows. Third, the strongest evidence appeared in gestational diabetes mellitus, gestational hypertension disorder, preeclampsia, fetal growth disorders, low birth weight, premature birth, autism spectrum disorder, epilepsy, as well as inflammatory biomarkers and oxidative stress. Fourth, the multipollutant approach is more appropriate because pregnant women are generally exposed to a mixture of pollutants, not just one pollutant. Conclusion: Urban ambient air pollution should be considered an important environmental determinant of maternal and child health.
